Project Objectives

  1. Expand knowledge of the genetic architecture of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in Africa through large-scale sample collection, analysis and follow-up.
  2. Increase understanding of the genetics of African populations
  3. Enhance neuropsychiatric genetic research capacity in Africa through the training of scientists and support the development of locally led research programs
  4. To establish measurements of validity and reliability for selected screening tools for schizophrenia and psychosis.

Project Design

The initial design is case-control study. Cases will be individuals with schizophrenia or bipolar and controls will be age, sex and ancestry matched with individuals from the same geographic location.

Projects Descriptions

NeuroGAP-Psychosis is a case-control study of 34,000 participants recruited across multiple sites within Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda. Participants will include individuals who are at least 18 years old with a clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder ('psychosis') or those with no history of psychosis. Research assistants will collect phenotype data and saliva for DNA extraction. Data on mental disorders, history of physical health problems, substance use and history of past traumatic events will be collected from all participants.
